Ujeli
is the tragic story of a 10 year-old girl from an impoverished
family in Nepal, who is forced to marry at the age of ten, depriving
her of an opportunity to go to school and forcing her to act
as an adult married woman with responsibilities. This film depicts
the gender discrimination that exists in Nepal between sons and
daughters in terms of opportunities for education, access to
medical care, and the ability to enjoy childhood itself. Ujeli
also shows the link between child marriages and the high maternal
mortality rate in Nepal. Ujeli is a classic Nepali film, and
enjoys immense popularity whenever it is screened.
